South Austin

Not so long ago, South Austin was primarily the home of Austin working class neighborhoods.  To live in South Austin, one had to have the mind-set that front yards are for parking cars in and if one had a garage, the driveway leading to it was not paved.  All of that has changed, for the most part, although there are some pockets of homes where that’s still the case.  South Austin has become the trendy place to live, and a home with a 78704 zip code carries a certain status with it.

One of the primary parks in South Austin is Zilker Park which hosts the internationally recognized “Austin City Limits” music festival, along with numerous other large events.  The Barton Springs pool,  the miniature train ride, and the outdoor theater, soccer fields, and picnic tables are there for all to enjoy.  In Travis Heights, Stacy Park runs through the middle of this turn of the century neighborhood.  And in the very heart of 78704 is the South Austin Tennis Center, which draws tennis players from all over Austin.

Lady Bird Lake forms the northern boundary of South Austin.  Homes located  nearby can fetch a handsome price simply because of the closeness to Austin’s business district just north of the Colorado River (which runs through the lake).  Shops, restaurants, and movie theaters are prolific along South Lamar, South First Street, and South Congress, the three main thoroughfares which service South Austin.
